1、 Structural characteristics
1. Unique U-shaped tube bundle structure
      The tube bundle of the U-tube heat exchanger is U-shaped, which allows the tubes to expand and contract freely. Because only one end of the tube bundle is fixed to the tube plate and the other end is free, when the tube bundle undergoes thermal expansion or contraction due to temperature changes, it can self compensate through the bent part of the U-shaped tube without generating significant thermal stress. For example, in chemical production, when the temperature difference between cold and hot fluids is large, such as high-temperature steam and low-temperature liquid for heat exchange, the thermal stress compensation characteristic of U-shaped tubes becomes particularly important, which can effectively avoid damage to the tube bundle due to thermal stress.
      The arrangement of U-shaped tube bundles inside the shell is relatively compact. Under the same inner diameter of the shell, U-shaped tube heat exchangers can accommodate more heat transfer area compared to straight tube heat exchangers. This structure allows hot and cold fluids to flow separately in the shell and tube sides for heat exchange. Normally, one fluid flows inside the pipe and another fluid flows outside the pipe (shell side), transferring heat through the pipe wall. For example, in the preheating process of crude oil in a refinery, the crude oil can go through the tube side, while high-temperature heat carriers (such as hot oil) go through the shell side, transferring heat from the heat carrier to the crude oil through the tube wall.
      The inlet and outlet positions of the shell side and tube side can be flexibly designed according to actual needs, making it convenient to connect with upstream and downstream pipelines. Moreover, at the inlet and outlet of the shell side and tube side, some devices are usually installed to prevent fluid short circuits, such as baffles, anti-collision plates, etc., to ensure that the fluid can be evenly distributed in the shell side and tube side, making full use of the heat transfer area.

      The tube bundle design of the U-tube heat exchanger allows for a longer flow path for the fluid inside the tube, which can increase the contact time between the fluid and the tube wall and facilitate sufficient heat exchange. Meanwhile, by designing the baffle plates on the shell side reasonably, turbulence can be generated in the shell side fluid, enhancing the heat transfer effect. For example, in HVAC systems, when using U-tube heat exchangers for air to water heat exchange, adjusting the spacing and angle of the baffles can create turbulence in the shell side of the air, improve the heat transfer coefficient between the air and the water pipe wall, and effectively enhance the heat transfer efficiency of the heat exchanger.
      Moreover, U-tube heat exchangers can adopt different pipe materials and diameters, as well as different tube bundle arrangements (such as triangular arrangement, square arrangement, etc.) as needed, to further optimize heat transfer performance. Because one end of the U-shaped tube is open, specialized cleaning tools (such as pipeline cleaning brushes) can be inserted from the tube end to clean the inside of the tube bundle. Especially when the fluid in the tube side is prone to scaling, such as in the process of seawater desalination, seawater passing through the tube side may produce scale inside the tube after a period of operation. Regular cleaning can effectively remove scale and restore the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger.
     The maintenance of the shell side is relatively easy.
